Embedding Documents in BlackBoard

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Just as you can embed videos and PowerPoint presentations in BlackBoard, you can also embed documents.  The advantage to embedding a document is much the same as embedding other files:

- it both appears and is more accessible

- it adds to the visual impact and makes your page more engaging.

Which service will host your documents?

In order to be embedded, a document must exist on a webserver somewhere. Many companies will host your documents online for free: Scribd, SlideshareDocstoc and Yudu, to name a few.  All are free services and require a registration.  In this example we will use Scribd, but the process is the same for the others. Upload your document and retrieve the url for embedding.

Directions

Go to http://www.scribd.com and open an account by clicking Sign Up.

Click the upload button. Browse for your file and click Open.

Your file will be uploaded and listed as Published.

Click the title of the document.  The page that appears is devoted to your document. Click the SHARE button.

Copy the Standard HTML embed code by highlighting the code and pressing ALT/C

Go to BlackBoard and open the course in which you want to embed the item.

Go to the Control Panel and open the Content folder in which you want to embed the item.

  • Click Add Item
  • Give your item a name
  • Click the Toggle HTML Source Mode icon
  • Paste the embed code that you copied
  • Click Submit. The document displays in the page.

You can scroll and read the document without opening a file.  It can  also be printed, downloaded or shown full screen.
